Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 In 1996, the hijacking of an Ethiopian Airline 767 became the worst in history when it crashed into the sea off the Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean. The pilot, Captain Leul Abate, was no stranger to hijacks, this was the third time an aircraft under his command had been threatened. I fly into Moroni, the capital of the Comoros. Unlike the Seychelles, Maldives and Mauritius, this Indian Ocean nation sees very little tourism and is one of the poorest countries on Earth. I stay in the lush surroundings of the Istandra Beach Hotel, but take a tour of the Island's sights, including the old capital, Iconi, a wander through the markets of Moroni, and stop by a beach to watch some fishermen out in the surf. Thanks for watching...... 1) Moroni 2) Mutsamudu 3) Fomboni 4) Domoni 5) Sima 6) Ouani 7) Mirontsi 8) Bambao 9) Koni-Djodjo 10) Moya The Comoros, officially the Union of the Comoros is a sovereign archipelago island nation in the Indian Ocean, located at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel off the eastern coast of Africa, between northeastern Mozambique and northwestern Madagascar. Other countries near the Comoros are Tanzania to the northwest and the Seychelles to the northeast. Its capital is Moroni, on Grande Comore. At 1,862 km2 (719 sq mi), excluding the contested island of Mayotte, the Comoros is the third-smallest African nation by area. The population, excluding Mayotte, is estimated at 798,000. The name "Comoros" derives from the Arabic word قمر qamar ("moon"). As a nation formed at a crossroads of many civilizations, the archipelago is noted for its diverse culture and history. The Union of the Comoros has three official languages -- Comorian, Arabic and French -- though French is the sole official language on Mayotte. Officially, in addition to many smaller islands, the country consists of the four major islands in the volcanic Comoros archipelago: northwesternmost Grande Comore (Ngazidja); Mohéli (Mwali); Anjouan (Nzwani); and southeasternmost Mayotte (Maore). Mayotte, however, has never been administered by the Comoros government and continues to be administered by France (currently as an overseas department) as it was the only island in the archipelago that voted against independence in 1974. France has since vetoed United Nations Security Council resolutions that would affirm Comorian sovereignty over the island. In addition, a referendum on the question of Mayotte becoming an overseas department of France in 2011 was held on 29 March 2009 and passed overwhelmingly. The Comoros is the only state to be a member of the African Union, Francophonie, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Arab League (of which it is the southernmost state, being the only member of the Arab League which is entirely within the Southern Hemisphere) and the Indian Ocean Commission. Since independence in 1975, the country has experienced numerous coups d'état and, as of 2008, about half the population lives below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day. The first human inhabitants of the Comoros Islands are thought to have been African and Austronesian settlers who traveled to the islands by boat. These people arrived no later than the sixth century AD, the date of the earliest known archaeological site, found on Nzwani, although settlement beginning as early as the first century has been postulated. The islands of Comoros became populated by a succession of diverse groups from the coast of Africa, the Persian Gulf, the Malay Archipelago, and Madagascar. Swahili settlers first reached the islands as a part of the greater Bantu expansion that took place in Africa throughout the first millennium. According to pre-Islamic mythology, a jinni (spirit) dropped a jewel, which formed a great circular inferno. This became the Kartala volcano, which in turn created the island of Comoros. The steep terrain around the airfield at Anjouan mean that aircraft can only make their approach over and take off towards the sea. In other words aircraft land in one direction and have to take off in the opposite direction. The aircraft is a BAe 146-200 operated by African Airlines Investments on behalf of Comoros Aviation International.

More than 100 passengers are stranded after pilots at Tanzania's main airport failed to report to work following their Christmas break, officials said. They were due to have flown on 27 December from Dar es Salaam to Comoros and other destinations. Angry passengers accused the carrier, state-owned Air Tanzania, of treating them badly. An Air Tanzania spokeswoman said it did not know why the pilots had failed to turn up for work. The pilots were off on Christmas Day and the next day and were expected back at work on Saturday. "We feel that there could be a problem because this is not a normal occurrence," said the spokeswoman, Lily Fungamtama. "We apologise to all our passengers for the inconvenience and we have done all we can to book alternative flights so they can go back to their travel schedules," she added. One passenger told the BBC she is no longer sure she can trust what the airline says, as it had repeatedly broken its promise about when the flight would leave. Passengers flying to the Tanzanian towns of Kigoma in the north-west and Mtwara in the south had been stranded, along with those heading for Comoros, reports the BBC's Tulanana Bohela from Dar es Salaam. The passengers, who include women and children, are being accommodated in small hotels in and around the city, she says.

Wide exterior of San'a International airport STORYLINE A Yemenia Air passenger jet en route from the Arabian Peninsula country of Yemen to the island nation of Comoros crashed in the Indian Ocean early on Tuesday, a Yemen airport official said. The official said the plane was going from the Yemen capital San'a to Moroni, on the main island of Grand Comore. It was not known how many passengers were on board the Airbus 310 or what had become of the passengers and crew. The official said most of the passengers on the plane were believed to be Comoros residents returning from Paris. According to preliminary information from Paris Airports press service, a Yemenia Air Airbus 330 flew on Monday from Paris to San'a, with 147 passengers and 11 crew on board. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media. The Comoros is an archipelago of three main islands situated about 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometres) south of Yemen, between Africa's southeastern coast and Madagascar. In Paris, a crisis phone number was set up at Charles de Gaulle airport. After landing in the Yemeni capital, the passengers disembarked and those destined for Comoros switched planes. Sixty-seven of the original passengers were flying on to Moroni, according to the press service. It was unclear how many more passengers boarded the Airbus 310 in San'a and if the crew was changed as well. Paris Airports said the plane on Monday from Paris also stopped in the French city of Marseille, which has a large Comoros community. There, it picked up additional crew, but Paris Airports would not say whether more passengers embarked in Marseille. In France, this week is the start of annual summer school holidays. France's RMC radio, speaking with a local journalist in Comoros, said there were families on board the aircraft. Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961, a Boeing 767-200ER, was hijacked on 23 November 1996, en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi on an Addis Ababa–Nairobi–BrazzavilleLagosAbidjan service, by three Ethiopians seeking asylum in Australia. The plane crash-landed in the Indian Ocean near Grande Comore, Comoros Islands, due to fuel exhaustion; 125 of the 175 passengers and crew on board died, along with the hijackers; the official accident report stated that of the survivors four were uninjured and the remainder sustained injuries. The incident is one of the few documented water landing attempts of a widebody airliner with survivors. Until the 11 September 2001 attacks, it was the deadliest hijacking involving a single aircraft, and the second deadliest hijacking after the 1990 Guangzhou Baiyun airport collisions.
