So they gave us a list to ask us if we could recognise a relative and if by tomorrow they don't find them, they have to know how this or that person is dressed and how could we identify this person - so that's why they gave us this list." 11. Man looking at passenger's list 12. Midshot of list 13. Various of friends and relatives at airport STORYLINE: Relatives of the 153 passengers on a Yemeni jetliner that crashed into the Indian Ocean on Tuesday waited at airports in France and the Comoros for news of their loved ones, insisting that their earlier warnings about the airline's safety weren't heeded by authorities. The plane crashed as it came in for a landing during howling winds on the island nation of Comoros. There were conflicting reports about whether a child survived. The crash came two years after aviation officials reported faults with the plane, an Airbus 310 flying the last leg of a journey from Paris and Marseille to Comoros, with a stop in Yemen to change planes. Most of the passengers were from Comoros, a former French colony. Sixty-six on board were French nationals. In Paris, relatives gathered in Roissy airport desperate for more information. Marc Rohff, a well known French Comorian rapper, told reporters there had been complaints about the airline for some time and that the Comoran government should have acted. Another man told reporters relatives would have to fill in lists detailing personal details of their relatives were they to have perished for the purposes of identification. Comoran and Yemeni officials said Tuesday that either a 14-year-old girl or a 5-year-old boy had survived. But neither report could be immediately verified, nor could earlier reports that three bodies and some plane wreckage had been recovered. Yemenia airline officials say the 11-member crew was made up of six Yemenis, including the pilot, two Moroccans, one Indonesian, one Ethiopian and 1 Filipino. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media. Members of the French Comoran community were protesting flight safety regulations at Yemenia following the crash of Yemenia Flight 626 on Tuesday morning off Comoros amid heavy winds. 152 people were killed in the crash. Miraculously one 12-year-old girl survived. Anger over the crash runs high in France's Comoran community. They have denounced what they call poor conditions on Yemenia flights and said safety rules are stricter in Europe than in Africa. In Marseille on Thursday, police broke up a protest of hundreds of shouting demonstrators who tried to block passengers from boarding a Yemenia airlines flight to Moroni, the Comoros capital. There were no injuries. Yemenia announced on Thursday night that it was suspending all its flights from Marseille to Moroni. More than 100 passengers are stranded after pilots at Tanzania's main airport failed to report to work following their Christmas break, officials said. They were due to have flown on 27 December from Dar es Salaam to Comoros and other destinations. Angry passengers accused the carrier, state-owned Air Tanzania, of treating them badly. An Air Tanzania spokeswoman said it did not know why the pilots had failed to turn up for work. The pilots were off on Christmas Day and the next day and were expected back at work on Saturday. "We apologise to all our passengers for the inconvenience and we have done all we can to book alternative flights so they can go back to their travel schedules," she added. One passenger told the BBC she is no longer sure she can trust what the airline says, as it had repeatedly broken its promise about when the flight would leave. Passengers flying to the Tanzanian towns of Kigoma in the north-west and Mtwara in the south had been stranded, along with those heading for Comoros, reports the BBC's Tulanana Bohela from Dar es Salaam. The passengers, who include women and children, are being accommodated in small hotels in and around the city, she says.

Various of Tanzanian AU soldiers shooting towards remnants of Bacar's troops using small arms and heavy mortar fire STORYLINE: The Comoros government seized control of the capital of the rebel-held island of Anjouan off the southeast coast of Africa on Tuesday, but sporadic fighting persisted as troops flushed out pockets of resistance and searched for the renegade colonel who is seeking the island's independence. Explosions and gunfire started before dawn as hundreds of troops backed by the African Union moved into Mutsamudu, the capital of Anjouan, one of three islands making up the Comoros archipelago. There was no official word on casualties, but an Associated Press reporter saw an elderly man being carried after he apparently was hit in the hip with a stray bullet. Two African Union soldiers also appeared to have minor injuries. The Comoros - an archipelago of three main islands 250 miles (400 kilometres) off Africa's southeast coast with a population of about 750,000 - has experienced a series of coups and political upheavals since gaining independence from France in 1975. The late Bob Denard, a notorious French mercenary, controlled the Comoros behind a figurehead leader for most of the 1980s, following a coup he led. Renegade Colonel Mohamed Bacar, who seized power in Anjouan in 2001 and stayed in power after an illegal election last year, has drawn increasingly strident warnings from the central government and the African Union. One Comoros officer said government forces had arrested three officers loyal to Bacar. But about a dozen armed men who identified themselves as Bacar loyalists appeared in control just over a mile (two kilometres) outside the capital, Mutsamudu. Inside the capital, gunshots rang out into the afternoon although cheering crowds welcoming the African Union troops were able to walk through the streets. Troops raided an old military garrison - believed to be a headquarters for Bacar loyalists - and emptied it of a cache of weapons, including assault rifles, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades. There are about 780 Tanzanian soldiers, 400 Sudanese and 450 Comorans in place for the Anjouan operation, said French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Pascale Andreani. France says its interest in the country is confined to backing the African Union and ensuring the territorial integrity of the Comoros. Mbeki said Bacar had written to his government with a pledge to hold elections in two months. Besides the initial landing force of several hundred soldiers, who arrived aboard four ships, about 100 Comoros military reinforcements arrived later by sea along with six pickup trucks mounted with machine guns. Officials at African Union headquarters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, refused to comment. Each of the three main islands of Comoros has a regional president under the country's main leader, President Ahmed Abdallah Sambi, who is based in Moroni on Grand Comore.
