Members of the French Comoran community were protesting flight safety regulations at Yemenia following the crash of Yemenia Flight 626 on Tuesday morning off Comoros amid heavy winds. 152 people were killed in the crash. Miraculously one 12-year-old girl survived. Anger over the crash runs high in France's Comoran community. They have denounced what they call poor conditions on Yemenia flights and said safety rules are stricter in Europe than in Africa. In Marseille on Thursday, police broke up a protest of hundreds of shouting demonstrators who tried to block passengers from boarding a Yemenia airlines flight to Moroni, the Comoros capital. There were no injuries. Yemenia announced on Thursday night that it was suspending all its flights from Marseille to Moroni. More than 100 passengers are stranded after pilots at Tanzania's main airport failed to report to work following their Christmas break, officials said. They were due to have flown on 27 December from Dar es Salaam to Comoros and other destinations. Angry passengers accused the carrier, state-owned Air Tanzania, of treating them badly. An Air Tanzania spokeswoman said it did not know why the pilots had failed to turn up for work. The pilots were off on Christmas Day and the next day and were expected back at work on Saturday. "We feel that there could be a problem because this is not a normal occurrence," said the spokeswoman, Lily Fungamtama. "We apologise to all our passengers for the inconvenience and we have done all we can to book alternative flights so they can go back to their travel schedules," she added. One passenger told the BBC she is no longer sure she can trust what the airline says, as it had repeatedly broken its promise about when the flight would leave. Passengers flying to the Tanzanian towns of Kigoma in the north-west and Mtwara in the south had been stranded, along with those heading for Comoros, reports the BBC's Tulanana Bohela from Dar es Salaam. The passengers, who include women and children, are being accommodated in small hotels in and around the city, she says.

Various of people standing outside the departure area of the airport 5. Various of people waiting inside the airport terminal 6. Wide exterior of San'a International airport STORYLINE A Yemenia Air passenger jet en route from the Arabian Peninsula country of Yemen to the island nation of Comoros crashed in the Indian Ocean early on Tuesday, a Yemen airport official said. The official said the plane was going from the Yemen capital San'a to Moroni, on the main island of Grand Comore. It was not known how many passengers were on board the Airbus 310 or what had become of the passengers and crew. The official said most of the passengers on the plane were believed to be Comoros residents returning from Paris. According to preliminary information from Paris Airports press service, a Yemenia Air Airbus 330 flew on Monday from Paris to San'a, with 147 passengers and 11 crew on board. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media. The Comoros is an archipelago of three main islands situated about 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometres) south of Yemen, between Africa's southeastern coast and Madagascar. In Paris, a crisis phone number was set up at Charles de Gaulle airport. After landing in the Yemeni capital, the passengers disembarked and those destined for Comoros switched planes. Sixty-seven of the original passengers were flying on to Moroni, according to the press service. It was unclear how many more passengers boarded the Airbus 310 in San'a and if the crew was changed as well. Paris Airports said the plane on Monday from Paris also stopped in the French city of Marseille, which has a large Comoros community. There, it picked up additional crew, but Paris Airports would not say whether more passengers embarked in Marseille. In France, this week is the start of annual summer school holidays. France's RMC radio, speaking with a local journalist in Comoros, said there were families on board the aircraft. Subscribe to Naked Science - http://goo.gl/wpc2Q1 Every other Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare... Not everyone has a fear of flying, but we all have a fear of crashing! Is this your worst nightmare, trapped in an aircraft heading for a crash landing? Just exactly what is like to be there when things go wrong? At the world’s busiest airports aircraft takeoff and land every 60 seconds. Every day 100,000 of flights depart and arrive safely. But some don’t. The aeroplane, the greatest technological achievement of the 20th century. In less than the 100 years since the Wright brothers’ first flight, this incredible machine has completely changed the world. But sometimes the miracle of flight comes with a heavy price. Aviation accidents and incidents covered in this documentary : United Airlines Flight 811 (24th February 1989) United Airlines Flight 811 experienced a cargo door failure in flight after its stopover at Honolulu International Airport, Hawaii. The resulting decompression blew out several rows of seats, resulting in the deaths of nine passengers. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 747-122. Singapore Airlines Flight 006 (31st October 2000) A Boeing 747-412 operating the flight, attempted to take off from the wrong runway at Chiang Kai-shek International Airport during a typhoon. The aircraft crashed into construction equipment on the runway, killing 83 of the 179 occupants aboard. Air France Flight 4590 (25th July 2000) Concorde flight operated by Air France which was scheduled to fly from Charles de Gaulle International Airport near Paris, to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. It crashed into a hotel in Gonesse, France. All one hundred passengers and nine crew members on board the flight died. On the ground, four people were killed and one critically injured. United Airlines Flight 826 (28th December 1997) Two hours into the flight, at 9400 meters, the plane received reports of severe clear-air turbulence in the area and the seat belt sign was turned on. Moments later, the aircraft suddenly dropped around 30 meters, seriously injuring 15 passengers and 3 crew members, although there was no structural damage to the aircraft. Aloha Airlines Flight 243 (28th April 1998) The Boeing 737-297 serving the flight suffered extensive damage after an explosive decompression in flight, but was able to land safely at Kahului Airport on Maui. The safe landing of the aircraft despite the substantial damage inflicted by the decompression established Aloha Airlines Flight 243 as a significant event in the history of aviation, with far-reaching effects on aviation safety policies and procedures. Alaska Airlines Flight 261 (31st January 2000) Alaska Airlines Flight 261, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft, experienced a fatal accident over the Pacific Ocean about 2.7 miles north of Anacapa Island, California. The two pilots, three cabin crewmembers, and 83 passengers on board were killed and the aircraft was destroyed. British Airways Flight 2069 (29th December 2000) On 29th December 2000, a mentally-ill passenger stormed the cockpit and attempted to hijack the plane. Captain William Hagan and his crew were able to apprehend the assailant while first officer Phil Watson levelled the flight, quickly putting the situation under control. Dawson's Field Hijackings (6th September 1970) In the Dawson's Field hijackings, four jet aircraft bound for New York City and one for London were hijacked by members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and instead landed at the PFLP's "Revolutionary Airport". Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 (23rd November 1996) The plane crash-landed in the Indian Ocean near Grande Comore, Comoros Islands, due to fuel exhaustion; 125 of the 175 passengers and crew on board died, along with the hijackers; the rest of the people on board survived with injuries. USAir Flight 1493 (1st February 1991) Friday 1st February 1991, the aircraft serving the flight accidentally collided with SkyWest Flight 5569 upon landing at Los Angeles. A series of abnormalities distracted the local controller, including an aircraft that inadvertently switched off the tower frequency and a misplaced flight progress strip.

This Boeing 767-260ER belonging to Ethiopian Airlines was en route from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to Nairobi, Kenya, on November 23rd 1996. 172 passengers and crew were onboard. The plane was hijacked by three Ethiopians seeking political asylum in Australia, and asking the crew to fly to Australia. The pilot explained they had only taken on the fuel needed for the scheduled flight and thus could not even make a quarter of the journey, but the hijackers did not believe him. The pilot secretly headed for the Comoro Islands, which lie midway between Madagascar and the African mainland. The plane eventually ran out of fuel. A fight with the hijackers prevented the crew to land on Comores aiport. The pilot tried to ditch the aircraft in shallow waters 500 metres off the coast. The plane left engine and wingtip struck the water first. The left engine then struck a coral reef, slowing that side of the aircraft quickly, causing the Boeing 767 to violently spin left and break apart. 122 of the 172 people on board were killed, along with the hijackers. The other 50 survived with injuries.

English/Nat Two men held for hijacking an Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed Saturday in Comoros Islands, killing more than 125 people, may have been innocent passengers and could be released, the government said Monday. Earlier recovery workers dragged a large section of the wreckage of the hijacked jet out of the clear blue waters of the beach resort. Ethiopian Airlines said that four of the 52 people pulled alive from the wreckage had died, raising the death toll to 127. At the beach near the Galawa Beach Hotel, a luxury resort on the main island of Grand Comore, recovery workers were trying Monday to drag a section of the wreckage of the hijacked jet out of the water. They finally pulled a chunk of the Ethiopian airplane fuselage onto the beach at low tide. Bodies could be seen in the crush of metal, wires and seats. Rescue workers used electric saws to cut bodies from the jet. Wearing masks against the smell of decomposing flesh, the workers zipped bodies into green bags and hauled them to a makeshift morgue set up in an old meat warehouse. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We can see inside, we have around five people, we can see them, but according to us, there are more." SUPER CAPTION: Captain of Comoros Army Police said 101 bodies had been recovered by late Monday. In addition to the bodies being pulled from the beached piece of the Boeing 767, police said several more bodies were trapped in wreckage still submerged a few hundreds yards (meters) off Grand Comore. Survivors were flown to hospitals across the region, including 25 who were taken to Nairobi, Kenya. Ethiopian Airlines said four of the 52 people pulled alive from the wreckage had died, raising the death toll to 127. Flight 961, which left the Ethiopian capital of Addis Abeba en route to the Ivory Coast, crash-landed in the Indian Ocean on Saturday. It was one of history's deadliest air hijackings. The three hijackers who stormed into the cockpit soon after the plane took off demanded to be taken to Australia and refused to allow the pilot to stop to refuel. As the Boeing 767's fuel tanks emptied, the pilot pleaded with the hijackers to let him land the jet safely at an airport in Moroni, capital of the Comoros Islands, but they refused. The motive behind the hijacking remains unclear. The government of Comoros Islands said Monday two men held for hijacking the plane may have been innocent passengers and could be released as soon as Tuesday.
